From digital color to real paint
A HEX code is a useful address for light on a screen. Paint is a material that absorbs, scatters, and reflects light. Matching them requires a controlled translation, not a literal conversion.
HEX describes an RGB display value
A six-digit HEX code is a compact way to specify red, green, and blue channel values. It does not identify pigments, opacity, gloss, spectral reflectance, or behavior under different illumination. Two physical samples can look similar under one light and separate under another even if a camera assigns them similar RGB values.
The display itself adds uncertainty. Brightness, color profile, viewing angle, ambient light, and screen gamut all change the appearance. Use HEX as a consistent digital target, not as a manufacturer formula for paint.
CIELAB makes comparison more perceptual
CIELAB represents color with L* for lightness and two opponent axes: a* roughly spans green to red, while b* roughly spans blue to yellow. Unlike raw RGB distance, Lab-based comparison is designed to relate more closely to perceived difference. That makes it useful for ranking candidate mixtures.
CIELAB is still a model. The conversion starts from assumed RGB and viewing conditions, and it cannot infer the physical pigments from a screenshot. It helps answer “which prediction is closer?” but not “will these exact paints create this spectral reflectance?”
Delta E is a difference score, not a guarantee
Delta E summarizes the difference between two Lab colors. Lower is closer. The CIEDE2000 formula improves the weighting of hue, chroma, and lightness differences compared with simple Euclidean distance. A low predicted score is a good reason to test a recipe first, but the physical result can diverge because the mixture model does not know every material variable.
Use Delta E to rank Mixora's predicted recipes against the same target. Do not treat a particular number as a universal pass/fail threshold across different screens, cameras, surfaces, and lighting.
Capture a better target
If the target comes from a physical object, photograph it in diffuse neutral light with a known neutral reference in the frame. Avoid direct reflections, colored walls, automatic beauty filters, and mixed daylight plus warm artificial light. Sample a representative area rather than a highlight or deep shadow.
A phone camera performs automatic exposure, white balance, tone mapping, and noise reduction. For critical work, use a calibrated color target or a colorimeter. For everyday creative work, take several samples and choose a robust average, then verify visually against the actual object.
Control the screen comparison
Turn off night mode and adaptive color features, reduce reflections, and use a moderate screen brightness. View the dry painted swatch beside the screen under neutral illumination, but remember that the screen emits light while the paint reflects it. Matching apparent lightness is especially difficult when the display is too bright.
A better final comparison is often physical-to-physical: print or obtain the target reference under a defined process, or compare the paint directly with the original object in its intended environment.
How Mixora simulates a pigment mixture
Mixora works across 36 wavelength bands from 380 to 730 nm. Each paint contributes an absorption coefficient K and a scattering coefficient S at every band. The coefficients are combined by recipe concentration, and the Kubelka–Munk equation predicts the reflectance of an optically thick mixture. That reflectance spectrum is evaluated under D65 illumination with the CIE 1931 observer before it becomes a display preview and Delta E score.
If you provide measured reflectance values, the engine uses them. If a paint has only a HEX reference, the engine reconstructs one smooth metamer that reproduces the reference as closely as possible. That is more physically useful for subtractive mixing than interpolating RGB channels, but it cannot recover the unique spectrum, particle size, binder, surface reflection, or true scattering power of an unmeasured paint.
A practical translation workflow
- Capture or enter the digital target under controlled conditions.
- Select only compatible, owned paints that you are willing to use.
- Let the spectral calculator rank a short recipe.
- Mix measured parts and apply a labeled swatch on the project ground.
- Wait for the paint to dry fully.
- Correct value, then hue, then chroma in small steps.
- Save the successful physical ratio and application notes.
This workflow uses color math where it is strongest—consistent comparison and candidate search—while leaving the final judgment to the material evidence.
Why manufacturer swatches still need caution
A manufacturer's online swatch is valuable source metadata, but it may be a design reference rather than a measured representation of wet and dry paint. Web images can also be transformed by compression and color management. Mixora labels verified records with their source and verification date and treats the HEX field as a screen reference. Always consult the current manufacturer page and make a real swatch for consequential work.
