Opacity and tint strength explained

Opacity describes how a paint covers what is underneath. Tint strength describes how strongly it changes another paint. They affect a recipe in different ways.

Opacity is about coverage

An opaque paint blocks more of the substrate at a given film thickness. A transparent paint allows the ground and lower layers to influence the result. This is why the same mixture can look different over white, gray, black, or a colored primer. Coverage also depends on application thickness, pigment concentration, binder, and the tool used.

Manufacturer opacity symbols are useful comparisons within a product line, but they are not universal laboratory values. A paint marked semi-opaque by one brand is not guaranteed to match another brand's semi-opaque paint.

Tint strength is about influence

A high-tinting-strength paint changes a mixture dramatically in a small amount. Phthalo blues and greens are familiar examples; some earth colors are comparatively gentle. If two equal drops have different tint strengths, a 1:1 physical ratio will not look visually balanced.

Add strong colors to weak colors, not the reverse. Begin with the larger, weaker component and introduce the strong modifier in small increments. This uses less paint and makes overshooting less likely. For very strong paints, dilute a small working portion with compatible medium when the process allows it, then use that controlled dilution for fine adjustments.

Mass tone and undertone reveal different information

Mass tone is the appearance of a thicker, concentrated paint film. Undertone appears when the paint is spread thinly or mixed with white. A color that looks nearly black in mass tone may reveal a blue, green, violet, or brown bias in undertone. That bias strongly affects mixtures even when it is difficult to see on the tube swatch.

Make a simple drawdown card for unfamiliar paint: apply a thick patch, drag it into a thin film, and mix a small portion into white. Label the brand, line, color code, and date. This physical reference is more useful than a screen chip when selecting candidates for a precise recipe.

Opacity changes how a match should be applied

A transparent mixture may numerically resemble the target color when viewed as a solid digital swatch, yet fail over the project's ground. You can sometimes reach the target through layering rather than one opaque mixture: establish the value below, then glaze a transparent hue over it. Conversely, an opaque light color may cover efficiently but produce a flatter surface than the target.

Record these variables with an important recipe
  • Paint brand, product line, and color code
  • Physical ratio and mixing unit
  • Primer or substrate color
  • Number and thickness of coats
  • Medium, dilution, and final varnish
  • Appearance after full drying

Why a calculator needs estimates

HEX values describe a displayed color, not concentration, opacity, or tint strength. Treat those values as working notes unless they come from measurements under controlled conditions.

When a suggested ratio repeatedly overshoots in the same direction, update the tint-strength estimate for your paint and save the successful physical ratio. Personal calibration is more valuable than pretending every tube behaves like an ideal RGB component.

A simple comparison test

Place equal amounts of a neutral white into several wells. Add the same small unit of each test color and mix thoroughly. The paint that produces the strongest change has greater practical tint strength in that setup. Repeat over the actual ground if coverage matters. This is not a standardized scientific measurement, but it gives consistent studio evidence for future recipes.
