Illuminant

A defined spectral description of the light under which a color is measured or evaluated.

A surface does not send the same spectrum to the eye under every lamp. Colorimetry therefore specifies an illuminant, such as D65, so measurements and comparisons refer to a shared lighting condition.

What “Strong evidence” means

The core definition or effect is well established across authoritative standards, foundational research or a broad research literature. The label does not make every practical prediction certain.

COMMON CONFUSION

An illuminant is a standardized spectral description; a real lamp only approximates it and can differ despite a similar kelvin rating.
