COLOR LESSON · LIGHT MEETS MATTER
Why paint gets darker when colors mix
Predict what the light will do, then follow it into the paint. Subtractive mixing makes more sense when you stop treating pigments like tiny screen pixels.
PREDICT BEFORE READING
Mix a bright yellow and a bright blue paint. Will the result reflect more light?
Make a prediction before opening the explanation. Think about what each pigment does to incoming white light.
Paint removes before your eye receives
White light reaches the paint film. Its particles absorb some wavelengths and scatter others back toward you. Add a second pigment and you usually add another set of absorptions. This is : the mixture is defined partly by what does not return.
EXPLAIN · MIXORA EDITORIALWhy the result can become muddy
A mixture can lose when the pigments jointly suppress a broad range of wavelengths. But ‘muddy’ is not a scientific property. It is a judgment about whether the result fits the intended hue, value, context and surface.
Light mixing
Combining emitted light can increase the wavelengths reaching the eye. RGB display channels can approach white.
Pigment mixing
Combining colorants usually increases absorption. Cyan, magenta and yellow inks can approach a dark neutral.
